THE WORKING STANDARD
A few principles. Applied with care.
01 / Clarity
Make the question smaller.
Define the decision before choosing a tool. A focused question makes the work easier to explain and review.
Purpose before activity
02 / Evidence
Show where the thinking comes from.
Distinguish observed information, assumptions and unresolved questions. A confident tone is not a substitute for evidence.
Reasoning you can inspect
03 / Agency
Keep the next move in your hands.
Agree the scope, responsibilities and fees before a commitment. Keep access limited to what the agreed work needs.
An informed next step
A practical loop, not a magic formula.
01 / Understand
Define the audience, the decision and the constraints. Separate available evidence from assumptions and list what needs checking.
02 / Make
Choose a bounded piece of work. Agree the useful output, responsibilities and what is outside the scope.
03 / Review
Record what changed, examine relevant signals and decide what to keep, adjust or investigate next.
Different people. Different forms of support.
For someone building skills
Work through a manageable exercise, explain your choices and use feedback to improve your judgement. A good learning path connects the concept to something you can actually produce.
For someone serving clients
Make your offer, process and deliverables easier to understand. Stronger delivery depends on clear scope, sound reasoning and useful handovers—not just more tools.
For someone running a business
Connect search activity to the audience and offer that matter. Prioritise a manageable change and agree who will implement it before creating a longer list of recommendations.
What this approach does—and does not—promise.
Clarity about the work
Discuss fit, scope, fees, responsibilities and the intended output before committing. Ask questions when something remains unclear.
No guaranteed outcomes
No promise of rankings, leads, revenue, employment or income. Outcomes depend on implementation, competition, resources and other factors beyond a coaching engagement.
Using AI responsibly in the workflow
Treat generated material as a draft to check, not evidence. Verify factual claims, protect confidential inputs and keep editorial judgement with a person. Abstract diagrams illustrate the working process, not customer results.
Keeping access proportionate
Begin with a public URL and a description of your goal. Account access, if needed later, must be agreed separately for the specific task. Do not email passwords or private customer data.
Make the working relationship clear.
BEFORE WE BEGIN
A good first conversation should help both sides understand the work—not rush you into a package.
YOU BRING
Context and a question.
Your starting point, the change you want to make and the constraints that matter. Public links and non-confidential examples are enough for an initial enquiry.
WE DISCUSS
Fit, scope and expectations.
The useful output, suitable format, responsibilities and fees before a commitment. Access and implementation are agreed only when the work requires them.
What stays under your control?
Whether to proceed, who approves changes and what information or access is shared. The website does not enrol you automatically or take payment.
What if the scope needs to change?
Pause and clarify the new work, responsibilities and cost before proceeding. An initial discussion is not permission to expand access or make unrelated changes.
Separate the three kinds of SEO work
On-page and content work
This concerns what the page says and how it helps a reader: search intent, useful information, headings and internal links. A content brief can specify changes without claiming that technical implementation or publication has already happened.
Technical SEO
This concerns whether the right URLs can be reached, crawled and interpreted as intended, including indexability, canonicals and sitemaps. It needs evidence from the actual site. A polished design or a draft preview does not demonstrate that these checks have passed.
Off-page work
This concerns relevant external references and relationships. It is a separate activity from publishing a page. Links, endorsements and coverage cannot be guaranteed; outreach or third-party placements must be agreed separately. SearchScale’s initial conversation should identify which of these areas the question belongs to.
THE PRACTICAL TAKEAWAY
Know what you are agreeing to.
A transparent working relationship makes the next decision easier.
Before work begins
Discuss the intended output, scope, fees and responsibilities. Identify what is unknown and what evidence is available. A first enquiry is a conversation, not an automatic enrolment or payment.
During the work
Distinguish observations, interpretations and proposed actions. Access, implementation and publication are separate decisions. Keep sensitive material out of initial conversations and agree any necessary handling before sharing it.
At handover
Review the output against the agreed question. Explain dependencies, limitations and practical next steps. Where changes are made, agree ownership and review arrangements rather than implying an indefinite support commitment.
PERSONALISED GUIDANCE
Personalised starts with listening.
Chris Matthews, founder of Velloran Group, has practised SEO and marketing since 2011. The starting point is your goal, your constraints and the decision you need to make. A useful recommendation should explain what to do next—and why that step fits your situation.
